OA Coach Study

The OA Coach Study is a 6-week research study investigating whether the “OA Coach mobile app is easy to use and whether it helps to improve knee symptoms, physical activity, sleep and mood in people with knee osteoarthritis.

The OA Coach mobile app is designed to teach you about your osteoarthritis and how to manage it. The app will provide learning modules and personalised goals to empower you to better manage your symptoms and take control of your health.

Study aims

Aim 1

To assess the usability of the OA Coach mobile app.

Aim 2

To assess if the OA Coach mobile app improves knee symptoms, physical activity, sleep and mood after a 6-week period.

Who can take part?

The study is suitable for people who:

• Are 45 years of age or older

• Have symptoms of knee osteoarthritis

• Own a smart phone

• Have internet access

• Are not taking blood thinners or statins

• Are able to communicate in English

What is involved for participants?

• If you are interested in participating in this trial, you will be asked to fill out an online screening survey to see if the study is suitable for you

• If the study is suitable for you:

  • Your study participation will last for 6 weeks

  • A Fitbit activity tracker will be posted to you. The Fitbit is to be worn for the duration of the study to track your activity and will be linked with the OA Coach Mobile application. After your participation in the study, you may keep the Fitbit

  • You will be asked to download the OA Coach mobile app and create an account

  • You will be asked to complete periodic surveys and questionnaires in the OA Coach mobile app and use it throughout the study period to meet your personlised goals

  • You will be asked to engage in short weekly learning modules about various topics of osteoarthritis including physical activity, exercise, weight, sleep, mood and flare management
